Every year on the anniversary of WWI, the nation comes together to honor our veterans from all branches of service as well as all wars to remind them that we “Never Forget”. This year, The Fountains partnered with Celebrate Outreach for a special presentation that brought to life how our local community is standing true to the motto of “Never Forget”. Sabine von Aulock, daughter of one of our residents, and two of her partners that are associated with Celebrate Outreach spoke about the work they are doing in the community with a program called Tiny Homes for Homeless Veterans. Celebrate Outreach is a partnership of St. Pete-area faith-based congregations and individuals which is dedicated to preventing and ending homelessness in our area through social justice, advocacy, community education and direct service.
In Pinellas County, 329 veterans spend each night in locations not meant for habitation. In the U.S., Florida has the 2nd highest number of homeless veterans, with close to 3,000. Approximately 1.4 million other veterans are considered at risk of homelessness due to poverty, lack of support networks and extreme shortage of affordable housing. Every person needs the safety and stability of a home to best address ongoing challenges and pursue opportunities. The goal of ending homelessness among veterans is best achieved community by community through an aggressive outreach program that assists those veterans in need. Every tiny home built and provided to a homeless veteran helps end the cycle of homelessness and provide a new beginning to a veteran. Each presenter shared the importance of the program, as well as what it meant to them personally. Remarkably, the organization is so close to building their first home, and our residents & veterans from The Fountains will be ready to personally welcome that veteran home on move-in day!
Later that evening, we celebrated all our Veterans with a special Veteran’s Day Salute with Kathy McAbee, and boy was it a full house! Not to mention, cake!
We are so proud of all our Veterans, not only for their dedication and service to our country, but their personal dedication to their fellow Veterans through their initiatives and support.
