The Fountains has many traditions that we love all year round, but Apple Pie in July is one of our absolute favorites! Each year, we have a competition to determine who on Boca Ciega Bay makes the best apple pie and, while it’s always a tough job being a judge, this year’s was certainly the hardest! With contestants representing our Dining Services, Community Life, and Assisted Living departments as well as residents from The Gardens and The Town Center, we had eight pies to taste test altogether. Each pie was a little different: some were traditional like grandma’s apple pie, some had cake mixed in, and some had a tasty caramel component. Each pie was judged on its appearance as well as taste and texture. The City of South Pasadena’s Mayor Elson, Commissioner Gigi Esposito, and Vice Mayor Johnson were gracious enough to join us for this special event as our guest judges. Our Associate Executive Director, David Schupack, loves apple pie and volunteered to assist in judging the pies. After much deliberation and many bites, our Dining Room Supervisor, Ray Flournoy, won first place and bragging rights for the next year. Coming in second place was our Community Life Assistant, Kamron Van Donkersgoed, and our Gardens residents came in third place with their pie.
After the trophies were handed out, everyone in attendance was treated to an apple blossom with vanilla ice cream as well as samples of each contestant’s pie. What a sweet day!
