As the days of Autumn get cooler, it is our friends company and bowls of chili that keep us warm. November instills a feeling of warm fires, hearty meals and rich desserts filled with pumpkin and whipped cream. Here at The Fountains, it also means it’s time for our annual chili cook off! This year marks our 9th Annual Chili Cook Off and there was no shortage of bootscootin’ fun! Our culinary-inclined associates entered their own chili concoctions for a chance to be named the best on Boca Ciega Bay. With five of our cooking contestants entering for the first time, it was a complete toss up on who was going to win, and surprisingly it wasn’t the head chef! Though the head chef did come in 3rd Place, it was truly a surprise to see our residents in The Gardens come in 2nd Place and our lovely head nurse for Bayada, Leighann, take 1st Place! Not only can they care for people well, but they apparently make a mean chili!
While we do this contest for the good chili tasting, we also do it with two other groups in mind, aside from our bellies. The money that is collected from the chili tasting has gone annually to Silver Santa’s, an organization that provides gifts to the elderly community during the holidays. This year, we raised $256 for them and could not be prouder!
The other group is a two-fold. Along with the Chili Cook Off, we host a Kiss the Pig contest. We place jars of the top manager picks of the year and residents, associates and families get to place money in the jar throughout the month. The person(s) with the most money in the jar on the day of the cook off wins the gift of planting a sweet kiss on a wet snout. So not only are our bellies and hearts full, but our laughter is joyful in watching this happen! The money raised from this contest goes towards our Associate Holiday Fund.
We love the cook off and we can’t wait to celebrate our 10th annual next year!
